How to redirect donors to a custom thank you page

Send supporters to any URL you choose after they complete a donation.

Written by Alyssa

By default, supporters see Givebutter’s confirmation screen after they complete a transaction. With a thank you page redirect, you can send them to a page of your own instead, like a thank you page on your website or the page where your donation form is embedded. This helps you tailor the donor experience to your organization and makes it easier to track conversions.

Thank you page redirects are available on all Givebutter accounts and work with every campaign type. You can set a redirect for your whole account to use the same redirect for every campaign. You can also override the account-level setting and set a different redirect on specific campaigns.

Automatic receipt emails, including any thank you message you’ve added, are still sent to supporters whether or not you use a redirect.

Account-level redirects 🏢

An account-level redirect applies to all of your campaigns unless a campaign has its own redirect.

  • In your Settings page, navigate to the Account tab, then locate the Thank You section.

  • Under Thank you page URL, enter the full URL of the page supporters should land on, starting with https://.

  • Turn on Automatically send donors to this page to redirect supporters after a few seconds. If you leave it off, supporters see a Continue to button on the confirmation screen instead.

  • Turn on Include donation details in the URL if you’d like to pass transaction details to your page.

  • Click Save.

Campaign-level redirects 🎯

A campaign-level redirect overrides your account setting, so you can send supporters of one campaign to a dedicated page.

If you have an account-level redirect, you can also turn off the redirect for a specific campaign while all other campaigns keep theirs.

  • Go to Campaigns and select the campaign you'd like to set a specific redirect for.

  • Go to the campaign's Settings tab, then scroll to the Thank You Page section.

  • If you have already set an account-level redirect, turn on Override account thank you page for this campaign.

  • Under Thank you page URL, enter the full URL of the page supporters should land on, starting with https://. To turn off the redirect for this campaign, leave the URL blank and supporters will stay on the confirmation screen.

  • Turn on Automatically send donors to this page to redirect supporters after a few seconds. If you leave it off, supporters see a Continue to button on the confirmation screen instead.

  • Turn on Include donation details in the URL if you’d like to pass transaction details to your page.

  • Click Save.

Track conversion details 📊

When Include donation details in the URL is on, Givebutter adds details about each completed transaction to the end of your thank you page URL. For example, a supporter making a one-time donation would be sent to a URL that looks like this:

yourwebsite.org/?gb_transaction=7241252818&gb_amount=200&gb_frequency=once&gb_campaign=YPQ4PI
  • gb_transaction is the transaction ID number, which matches the transaction in your Givebutter dashboard.

  • gb_amount is the donation amount in dollars, without a dollar sign. For example, a $2,000 donation shows as 2000 and a $5.50 donation shows as 5.5.

  • gb_frequency shows how often the donation repeats: once, monthly, quarterly, or yearly.

  • gb_campaign is the campaign code, which is the code at the end of your campaign link.

If you promote your campaigns with ads, emails, or social posts, conversion tracking shows which efforts lead to real donations. Tools like Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, Google Ads, and Meta Ads Manager can use these details to record a completed donation as a conversion.

Donor names and contact details are never included in URL tracking details.

UTM and ad click tracking 🧭

If a supporter reaches your campaign through a link that has tracking parameters, Givebutter passes those parameters along to your thank you page URL. This includes UTM parameters (any parameter starting with utm_), gclid from Google Ads, and fbclid from Meta. This way, your analytics tools can connect a completed donation to the post, ad, or email that brought the supporter in.

For example, if a supporter clicks this link from an Instagram post:

givebutter.com/yourcampaign?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=spring_appeal

They’ll be redirected to:

yourwebsite.org/thanks?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=spring_appeal

You can also add your own tracking parameters to the thank you page URL in your settings, for example:

yourwebsite.org/thanks?utm_source=givebutter&utm_medium=donation&utm_campaign=spring_appeal

If a parameter in your settings URL conflicts with one from the supporter’s link, the one in your settings is used.

Best practices 💡

  • Check that the URL loads correctly before you make any changes.

  • Make a test donation to see the redirect yourself.

  • If you use ads or analytics, add your conversion tracking to the destination page so every completed donation is recorded.
