How to connect an AI assistant to your account

Ask AI assistants like Claude or ChatGPT questions about your account, using your organization's live data.

About AI Connections πŸ€–

AI Connections let you link an AI assistant (like Claude or ChatGPT) directly to your Givebutter account. Once connected, you can ask it questions the same way you'd ask a colleague, and it'll answer using your organization's live data, including contacts, transactions, recurring plans, pledges, campaigns, teams, auctions, messages sent, and more. Givebutter hosts this connection securely, so there's nothing to install or run yourself.

What can you do with it?

βœ… Ask how much you raised in a specific period

βœ… Look up your top or recurring donors

βœ… Find contacts that match specific criteria (location, amount given, tags)

βœ… Break down donations by campaign

❌ Create, edit, or delete anything in your account

❌ Connect more than one Givebutter account at the same time

❌ Financial health questions (overhead ratio, cash runway, etc.)

How it works πŸ”

  • Connect your AI assistant to your account once, using your Givebutter login.

  • From then on, you can ask it questions in everyday language. No special commands or technical knowledge needed.

  • Your AI assistant answers using your actual account data, pulled live each time you ask.

Before you connect πŸ”’

  • Your assistant can only ever see Givebutter accounts you're already a member of. Connecting doesn't grant any new access.

  • What happens to your data depends on the version of the AI tool you're using. Business or organization plans typically don't use your data to train their models. Free or personal versions may, unless you turn that off in your own account settings. Please check this before connecting your Givebutter account to a personal version of any AI tool.

  • Payment card numbers are never included in AI responses.

Connect an AI assistant πŸ”—

  • Once your account is enabled for AI Connections, open the AI assistant you'd like to use (Claude, ChatGPT, and others are supported).

Givebutter is currently listed in some AI tool app stores, but for others, you can add it manually as a custom connection. The guides linked below walk through how, for each platform.

  • Directly from your AI platform, add Givebutter as a connection (some tools may call this an MCP connector or MCP server) and log in when prompted. You'll never be asked to type a password or API key directly into the AI tool itself. If you have access to more than one Givebutter account, you'll be asked to pick which one this connection should use.

Exact setup steps look a little different for each AI assistant:

We also have instructions available for the following platforms:

Ask a question πŸ’¬

  • Once you're connected, you can ask questions using plain language. Some examples include:

    • "How much did we raise in the last 30 days?"

    • "Show me my top 10 recurring donors this year."

    • "Find contacts in California who gave more than $500."

    • "Break down donations by campaign for Q1."

  • Your assistant reads your account and answers directly. You don't need to log into the Givebutter dashboard at all.

FAQ πŸ€”

What data can an AI connectors access?

AI connectors can access the data in the Givebutter account you connect: contacts, transactions, campaigns, recurring plans, and more. It can only see what your own Givebutter login can see.

AI connectors work with the same access as your Givebutter login and only within the permissions granted to the connection. An AI assistant can never move money or process payments, and you can disconnect at any time.

How does authentication work?

You connect by signing in to your Givebutter account through OAuth. Your Givebutter password is never shared with AI connectors, the connection is scoped to a single account, and each teammate authorizes their own connection.

Conversations with AI assistants, including any Givebutter data it retrieves, are handled according to the AI connector's privacy policy and the data controls on your plan. Please see your AI assistant's privacy policy for more details.
