How to edit and manage your recurring donation

Edit and manage your recurring plan and payment methods right from the link in your emailed receipt, or from your Givebutter user profile.

You can edit or cancel your recurring plan at any time, whether or not you have a Givebutter login. The easiest way to edit your recurring plan is to click the management link at the bottom of any Givebutter receipt. The options you can change at any time include:

  • amount of the donation

  • frequency of the donation

  • status of the plan (Active, Paused, or Canceled)

  • payment method used

  • processing fee settings

Creating a recurring plan does not automatically create a Givebutter login, account, or user profile, nor is one required. You can still edit your recurring plan if you do not have a login.

Edit your recurring plan ✏️

  • Near the bottom of the email receipt you received for your last charge, you'll see a link to manage your recurring donation.

You can use any receipt associated with the relevant recurring plan – it doesn't need to be the most recent receipt.

  • Clicking this link in your receipt will direct you to a Givebutter web page titled Manage Your Gift. You'll see a summary of your current recurring plan.

  • Click Edit Plan to make changes.

  • A window will pop up where you can edit your recurring donation, including:

    • amount of the donation

    • frequency of the donation

    • status of the plan (Active, Paused, or Canceled)

    • payment method used

    • processing fee settings

  • Make sure to click Save Changes when you're done!

Link a recurring plan to your user profile 🔗

If you've signed up as a Givebutter admin managing your own account, registered as a bidder for an auction, or otherwise created a Givebutter login, you have a user profile! You can link recurring plans to your login for easy management access in one place.

It is not required to have a Givebutter login to manage or edit your recurring plan. You can still manage your plan without a login.

  • If you don't have an account connected to your plan, a box will appear on the Manage Your Gift page in the upper right corner that says Connect Account.

  • Click the link that says Sign in or create an account, then click Sign in to connect your user profile (your login) and your recurring plan.

  • Click Link Plan in the popup window.

  • Once your plan is linked, it'll appear on your user profile page under the Recurring Gifts section. You can now manage your plan from here.

Update a payment method from your user profile 💳

Recurring donations are payable via credit/debit card or PayPal only.

  • Once your recurring plan is linked to your user profile, scroll down to the Payment Methods section.

  • Click Manage on the right side of the relevant payment method. You can then edit or delete the payment method.

  • You can also click Add New to add a new payment method.

Access receipts from your user profile 🧾

On your user profile, navigate to the Payment History section and click View Receipt next to the desired transaction. You can then view and download PDF receipts from your previous donations.

Cancel a recurring plan from your user profile ❌

  • Click Manage in the Recurring Gifts section for the donation you'd like to cancel.

  • You'll be taken to the Manage Your Gift page. Click Edit Plan.

  • Under Status, click Pause or Cancel Plan, and change the status to Canceled.


I made a recurring plan. Do I have a Givebutter account? Do I need to login to manage my plan?

Creating a recurring plan does not automatically create a login. Unless you created a login separately, you probably don't have a Givebutter account or user profile. You can manage your recurring plan without one! All you need is one of your receipts.

I don't have my most recent receipt. What should I do?

Receipts are sent to the email address you entered when you submitted your donation, and a new one is sent each time a donation processes (ie. every month.) You can use the link in any receipt from a recurring plan to manage it. It does not need to be the most recent one!

I don't have any receipts from Givebutter. How do I manage my plan?

If you didn't receive your receipt, please double-check your Spam folder and search for emails from Givebutter. If you still can't find it, please contact us! We can provide you with a secure management link.

What about tips and fees?

Any tips or fees you choose to cover on your initial donation will also be continued for your recurring donation. You can change those options at any time by managing your recurring gift.

I'm an admin, and a donor wants to edit their recurring plan.

  • If the donor has one of their receipts, you can send them this page! The donor can edit their recurring plan themselves following the steps above.

  • If they don't have any receipts, you can follow these directions to resend a donor's receipt! They can then edit their plan following the steps above.

I'm an admin and need to cancel a recurring plan on behalf of a donor.

Head to the Recurring Plans page in your dashboard and locate the plan you'd like to cancel. Click the three dots [...] on the right side of the relevant plan, and click Cancel Plan. Please note that admins cannot manage other details (such as donation amount or frequency) on behalf of a donor.

When are monthly and quarterly plans charged?

Monthly and quarterly plans are not charged at exactly 30 or 90-day intervals. Monthly plans will be charged every month without overflowing to the next month if the donation was originally submitted on the 31st. Likewise, quarterly plans are charged every three months (without overflowing to the next month if the donation was originally submitted on the 31st).

Will I be notified if my card is about to expire?

Yes – Givebutter will email you if the card on file for your recurring plan is set to expire before your next donation is processed. This email is sent from [email protected], with the subject line: "Action Required: Your payment method will expire before your next donation."

What happens if my recurring plan fails to process?

If a recurring plan fails, an email is sent to the admin and the donor. Givebutter will reattempt the charge three times, at 48-hour increments. If the charge is unsuccessful after three attempts (ie. the next bill date was over a week ago), the plan is no longer manageable by the donor, and you will need to create a new recurring plan.
