How to customize donation amounts

Let Givebutter suggest donation amounts, or set your own with a description for each giving level.

The simplest way to increase giving is to personalize the donor experience as much as possible! We’ve made it easy to optimize and customize the donation amounts presented to your donors, making the most of your campaign.

Suggested amounts ✨

Givebutter picks one-time donation amounts your donors can choose from, based on donations to your campaign so far, your organization's past giving and similar campaigns on Givebutter. Suggested amounts update as donations come in, so the amounts donors see can change over time. Suggested amounts only apply to one-time donations, and recurring amounts aren't affected.

If you want every donor to see specific amounts, or you want to add descriptions to each giving level, you can set your own amounts instead. You can switch between the two options at any time.

  • From your dashboard, select the campaign you'd like to edit.

  • Select the Tools tab, then scroll to the Donation amounts section.

  • Suggested amounts is selected by default on most new campaigns. To keep using it, leave it selected and click Save.

  • To enter your own amounts, select Set your own amounts and follow the steps in the next section.

Set your own donation amounts ⚙️

You can set up to eighteen custom donation levels on Forms and Pages, plus an additional level if you include an "Other" option for donors to fill in their own amount. Using customized donation amounts and descriptions, you can:

  • Limit the number of default donation amounts, ie. $50, $100, $500, $5,000

  • Explain the impact of each donation, ie. $250 = Specialized pet therapy

  • Offer an incentive for specific amounts, ie. $100 = Includes a sticker pack

Amount descriptions are not included in transaction exports. Only the price will be tracked. If you sell specific items, consider listing them as Tickets instead, or add a custom field if you need more information for reporting purposes.

  • Navigate to your dashboard and select the campaign you'd like to customize.

  • Select the Tools tab at the top, scroll to the Donation amounts section, and select Set your own amounts.

  • Enter your desired amounts and optional descriptions. Descriptions have a limit of 160 characters per entry.

  • Click "+" to insert a new amount (up to eighteen options).

  • To delete a custom amount option, click the red trash can icon on the right side.

  • Click Save after you've made your changes.

Dynamic donation amounts ⚖️

You can also set different donation levels for one-time donations and recurring plans. For example, your one-time donation levels could be $100, $200, and $300, and your monthly donation levels could be $10, $30, and $50. Dynamic donation amounts give your supporters more choices and allow you to cater to a wider range of giving capacities. This option is available for Form and Page campaigns.

To configure different sets of customized donation levels based on frequency (one-time, monthly, quarterly, or yearly), select a frequency tab under the Donation Amounts section, and set the values you'd like to use.

If your campaign uses our suggested amounts, set your recurring amounts from the frequency tabs. Suggested amounts only apply to the one-time tier.

You can only set dynamic donation amounts for the frequencies enabled on your campaign. For example, you cannot set dynamic amounts for annual plans if you only have monthly plans enabled.

Other donation amounts ✏️

Select whether you'd like to show an Other option for supporters to give any amount they choose. If this is selected, donors can enter any number, regardless of your pre-set options.

This is currently the only way to create a "pay-what-you-can" option on Givebutter campaigns. You cannot enter "Other" amounts for ticket purchases.

FAQ 🤔

What if I have more custom donation amounts I want to use? Can the donation levels be increased?

You can only set up to eighteen custom donation amounts. If you'd like to make more options available, we'd recommend creating the options as Tickets on an Event campaign. These are better suited for selling "items", especially if you want to be able to sell multiple quantities or add photos.

What happens if I remove all of the available donation amounts?

If all donation amounts are removed, our system detects this and replaces "Other" with "Enter amount". If you disable the "Other" donation amount option, no options will appear, and donors will not be able to complete a transaction.

no donation amounts

How do I set a minimum donation requirement?

You can require a minimum donation by checking Require a minimum donation amount in the Donation amounts section. You'll be prompted to enter your required minimum – make sure to save your changes!

Are custom donation amount descriptions included in any reports? Can I use customized donation amounts instead of Tickets?

If you set customized donation amounts, the description set will not appear in exports or reports. If you set multiple options for the same amount with different descriptions, these options will not be differentiated in your reports. If you are selling items or tickets, we recommend creating these as Tickets instead, so you can accurately report the number of each sold.

Why do my donors see different amounts than the ones in my settings?

Your campaign is probably using Suggested amounts, which picks one-time amounts for you and updates them as donations come in. To show your donors specific amounts, select Set your own amounts in the Donation amounts section and click Save.
